NIOS: National Institute of Open Schooling

Since 2016, Mathakondapalli Model School has offered the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) pathway for Class 10 (Secondary) and Class 12 (Senior Secondary), giving students a government-recognised alternative to mainstream board examinations without leaving the MMS community. NIOS itself was established in November 1989 as an autonomous institution under India's Ministry of Education, authorised by the Government of India to examine and certify learners up to the pre-degree level; the Association of Indian Universities recognises its Senior Secondary Certificate as equivalent to any other recognised board.

To register for the Senior Secondary (Class 12) course, a learner must have already passed the Secondary course from a recognised board. Admissions run in two cycles each year: Block 1, for the April examination session, closes on 15 September; Block 2, for the October session, closes on 15 March. Since seats and formalities take time, MMS encourages families to begin the admission process two to three months ahead of these dates.

As MMS puts it: “What we teach is mandated by the Government… but how we teach is our uniqueness.” Students on the NIOS pathway at MMS still benefit from the same campus community, mentoring and Centre of Excellence labs as their CBSE peers.
