National Institute for Open Schooling (NIOS) formerly known as National Open School (NOS) was started as a project on “Open Schooling” under the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in 1979. In November 1989, the NOS was made an autonomous organisation by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India, in pursuance of the National Policy on Education. The Pilot Project of CBSE on “Open School” got amalgamated with the NOS, and in July 2002, the NOS got rechristened as the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS).

Since 2016, M.M.School offers the option of open schooling for class 10 (Secondary) and class 12 (Sr. Secondary) through the NIOS. The admission to this mode of schooling takes place two to three months ahead of the official last date of admission of every new academic block. Officially, the last date for block 1 (April exams) admission is September 15 and the last date of block 2 (October Exams) admission is March 15.
